"support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be."

(Eric Parsloe, The Oxford School of Coaching & Mentoring)

Effective mentoring enables the learner to develop confidence to explore new ideas or experiences.

It is about giving help and support in a non-threatening way in a manner that the recipient will appreciate and value and that will empower them to move forward with confidence towards what they want to achieve.

What not to when mentoring:
1. Not to feel unwelcomed.
2. Not to overload with information.
3. Don't fail to listen.
4. Not to discourage, try to give balance feedback.
5. Not to destroy confidence.

Quality and skills of a mentor:
1. genuine interest in seeing people advance and can relate to their problems
2. knowledge, keen to learn
3. experience
4. goal clarity
5. quality
-- appearance, self-awareness, willingness, commitment, enthusiasm, confidentiality and time management.
-- ability to organise, coordinate, supervise, monitor and assess the learning of others.
6. patience and interpersonal skills
-- listening, paying attention, behavioural-awareness, empathy, motivating, influencing, liaising, counselling and empowerment
7. has good network
8. chemistry

Remember how it felt to be a student!
